Babies Need Tummy Time, Too

The Back to Sleep program encouraging parents to put babies to sleep on their backs has reduced the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by 40 percent. But if babies spend too much time on their backs, they can develop a misshapen head. It is equally important for babies to have time on their tummies. Cincinnati Children's physicians emphasize the following tips for parents:

  • Allow your baby to play on his or her belly on a safe, firm surface under an adult's direct supervision
  • Avoid having your baby sleep in or spend
prolonged time in an infant carrier
  • Alternate the side to which your baby's head is turned during sleep
  • Increase tummy time during waking hours as your baby's neck muscles gain strength

Atkins Diet for Kids?
A study underway at Cincinnati Children's will determine whether the Atkins Diet is effective in obese adolescents. Physicians will study a low carbohydrate diet in 70 obese adolescents who will be seen regularly by a dietitian and pediatrician. The low carbohydrate diet is one in which total calories are not restricted, but the intake of carbohydrates is limited to 50 grams a day. There are questions about how best to implement low carbohydrate diets to ensure their success. Preliminary studies in children have shown that low carbohydrate diets are safe and effective, although they should not be undertaken in children and adolescents unless under the supervision of a physician.Atkins Diet for Kids?
Families Give Input on Waiting Room Renovations

Construction began this fall to renovate the surgical waiting area on the third floor of Location B at Cincinnati Children's. Improvements are being made based on input from parents and families. The changes will help speed up the registration process so patients will be able to enter the surgery area sooner. New conveniences include:

  • Computer and laptop hookups
  • A beverage zone
  • Larger consultation rooms and a quiet space
  • Bright, colorful seating
  • A more open play area

Renovation is scheduled to be complete by the end of January 2005.
