Study Finds More Obese Teens Undergoing Bariatric Surgery
A new study from Cincinnati Children's shows that bariatric surgery among teens has tripled in recent years, and that the procedure poses no greater risks for them than for adult patients. "This study suggests that the risks for adolescents undergoing weight loss surgery are low and may be even lower than in adults," says Thomas Inge, MD, PhD, surgical director of the Comprehensive Weight Management Center at Cincinnati Children's.
In fact, the findings show teens have a zero death rate from the procedure and a faster rate of recovery than older patients. Visit www.cincinnatichildrens.org/bariatric to learn more about bariatric surgery online.
Cincinnati Children's Launches Recycling Program
On average, Cincinnati Children's generates 6.4 tons of solid waste every day – that's the weight of one elephant! To help reduce this waste, the medical center recently kicked off a recycling program at our main campus. Project champion Eddie Leonard, a clerk in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, hopes to spread it to other sites eventually. "What we're doing here is taking little steps," says Leonard. "But we can make a difference. We help all these kids here every day. Don't we also have an obligation to make sure they have a clean environment to grow up in?"
Help for Families of Children With Special Needs
Having a child with special health care needs poses the constant challenge of finding information, resources and services. The Special Needs Resource Directory, created by the Center for Infants and Children with Special Needs at Cincinnati Children's, is a comprehensive reference tool for parents, caregivers and health care providers. It provides web site links to local, regional and national information on specific disabilities, strategies to help you advocate for your child, and community connections for ongoing support. Find it online at www.cincinnatichildrens.org/special-needs.
