Kyla’s Family Happy to Get Care Closer to Home
Last year an infection swelled the entire left side of then 10-year-old Kyla Jackson’s face. Her mother, Donna Martin, of Mason, was understandably alarmed. Kyla was referred for a computed tomography (CT) scan at Cincinnati Children’s Burnet Campus. She and her mom now look forward to receiving the same expert care at Liberty Campus.
“I knew going to a children’s hospital like Cincinnati Children’s was the best place for Kyla because they’ve cared for her since her diagnosis with type 1 diabetes at age 5. It’s certainly a hospital we know very well and trust,” Donna said.
A CT scan is a non-invasive procedure that takes cross-sectional images of the brain or other internal organs to detect any abnormalities that may not show up on an ordinary X-ray. Cincinnati Children’s uses the most advanced CT imaging technology. The 64-slice CT scanner is especially useful for examining patients at Cincinnati Children’s who are unable to hold their breath or who are young and suffering with respiratory distress.
This same technology used at the main Cincinnati Children’s Burnet Campus is now found at our new Liberty Campus. Child life specialists are also on hand to help children who may need additional items to help them relax, like a light globe that makes stars on the ceiling or a stress ball to squeeze during the entire experience.
“Our pediatrician was able to give us the results within hours after the scan was taken. Luckily, Kyla’s swelling wasn’t life threatening,” Donna said. “With the opening of Liberty Campus, our commute time will be cut in half for things like CT and diabetes care.”
