At least one patient is sad to see the spring storms of 2011 go. From his room on the oncology ward, Eli Wilkening bonded with his caregivers over the weather and talk of tornados and wind speeds. Eli, who is about to finish treatments for leukemia, is looking forward to worrying about nothing more than dark clouds in the sky.
Asia Werner was born with a defective heart. On her first birthday, another family’s tragedy saved her life. A month-old baby boy suffocated in his crib, but his parents donated his organs to make part of him live on. Asia, now 11, got his heart and still considers him as close as a little brother. Five-year-old Mikel Dijak was born with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, a rare genetic disease that attacks his bone marrow and pancreas. His mom, Michelle Gardner, says he is a brave little boy who enjoys himself whether he is playing with his toys, staying in the Ronald McDonald House or going through chemotherapy.
