Cincinnati Children’s is leading an international, multi-center study to track the epidemiology and outcomes for children with acute kidney injury (AKI).
The AWARE study (Assessment of Worldwide AKI, Renal Angina and Epidemiology) has enrolled more than 2,000 children from more than 20 intensive care units around the world. More than 500 participants were enrolled at Cincinnati Children’s.
Acute kidney injury is associated with poor outcomes in critically ill children, yet most pediatric studies are from single centers or only on children with AKI receiving some form of dialysis The central purpose of the AWARE study is to describe pediatric AKI comprehensively and predict which critically ill children are most at risk.
The study’s goals include:
“AWARE is an unprecedented international collaborative effort in the field of pediatric AKI,” says Stuart Goldstein, MD, Director, Center for Acute Care Nephrology and principal investigator for the project. “The novel biomarkers used in this risk prediction model will provide intensive care physicians actionable information by which to manage fluids, medications and referral for acute dialysis. This will bring a form of personalized medicine to the ICU.”
The project also will help clinicians follow AKI survivors long-term, which could lead to earlier interventions to minimize development of chronic kidney disease.
Data will be collected during the next several months. Findings will be submitted for publication as soon as Spring 2015.
