Annual Report 2002-03

2002-03 Research Highlights and Annual Report

Dear Colleagues:

Today, the future looks much healthier for infants, children and teenagers, thanks to the groundbreaking research at Cincinnati Children's Research Foundation in 2003 that continued to improve child health.

As part of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, the Research Foundation ranks among the top three comprehensive pediatric centers receiving National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grants. We are the largest pediatric research program in the Midwest, conducting both basic and clinical research in nearly 600,000 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratory and office space.

Translational and clinical research efforts are a key focus as we work to better the care of children with serious diseases. These efforts are supported by sophisticated facilities and equipment for bioinformatics, functional genomics and proteomics, enabling us to generate and process genomic information for an array of animal and human studies.

In fiscal year 2003, our faculty numbered 338, with 312 having full-time, primary appointments in the Department of Pediatrics, an increase of 14 percent over last fiscal year. Many of the 52 faculty members in Pediatric Surgery, 26 in Anesthesiology and 30 in Radiology also participated in Research Foundation activities.

Our sponsored program awards reached a record high of $98 million, increasing nearly 17 percent over fiscal year 2002. More than $72 million of that total came from the NIH. Significant grants included:

  • Renewed NIH funding for five years for both the Cincinnati Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center and the Human Milk Program Project
  • NIH funding for the Cincinnati Digestive Diseases Research Development Center: Center for Growth and Development, to promote research into the fundamental processes of the digestive tract and discover novel or improved therapies

I invite you to read on to learn more about the life-improving research underway at Cincinnati Children's. If you would like more in-depth information on any of our programs, please refer to the PDF's of individual programs, accessible from the directory to the right. We welcome your interest.

Sincerely,
