Cincinnati Children's Research Foundation Endowment
In 1926, with 43 years of experience in caring for children, the board of trustees and physicians of Children's Hospital, in Cincinnati, opened a new facility to national acclaim. Yet, even then, they believed their true purpose was broader than offering Cincinnati's children the finest medical care.
Hospital director A. Graeme Mitchell, MD, wrote to the board: "Unless the hospital is interested in the prevention as well as the cure of disease, unless effort is made to study and investigate problems in a manner which will add in a constructive way to existing knowledge, we have all of us failed to function to the fullest extent."
Dr. Mitchell's argument must have been convincing, because that year, board president William Cooper Procter donated $2.5 million for the building and endowment of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Research Foundation.
A long and faithful supporter of the hospital, and a former president of the Procter & Gamble Co., Procter's legacy lives today in a thriving research center recognized around the world for its achievements.
Today, the Procter Scholar Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center prepares physicians for biomedical or clinical investigative careers in pediatrics.
Designed to facilitate the career development of pediatricians, the program is aimed at highly skilled MD or PhD / MD graduates with a strong career commitment to academic pediatrics. The program provides both financial support and appropriate scientific mentorship in preparation for independent investigatorship.
Following Procter's model of generosity, the William Cooper Procter Society recognizes and honors friends of Cincinnati Children's who inform invest in the future of the medical center through planned or deferred gift arrangements.
