What is Translational Research?
Translational research is broadly defined as research that will provide a scientific link between laboratory research and human trials. The purpose of the Translational Research Initiative is to stimulate the development of pre-clinical and human translational trials that will improve the care of children with severe diseases. Adequate infrastructure has been developed to insure support for pre-clinical and clinical translational research projects. The initiative is funded by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
Translational Research Trials Office
To assist with this work, Cincinnati Children's has established the Translational Research Trials Office (TRTO). Services from the Translational Research Trials Office are available to all divisions and departments within the institution. The Translational Research Trials Office can assist researchers with a wide variety of needs, including the following:
- Clinical Study Monitoring
- CRF Development
- Design and development of Phase I investigator-initiated clinical studies
- Submission of protocol/informed consent to local and federal regulatory bodies
- Investigational New Drug (IND) applications to the FDA
- Organization of regulatory documents
- Protocol Development and Review
- Scientific Review
- Data safety monitoring boards
- Recruitment of participants
- Obtaining proper consent
- Clinical data management and submissions
This support is provided by the Translational Research Trials Office, under the direction of Tim Cripe, MD, PhD. Within the Translational Research Trials Office, research associates are available to support the work of investigators at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. This initiative also utilizes the services of the Clinical Trials Office (CTO) and the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC.)
The faculty and staff of the Translational Research Trials Office are well-versed in human research study regulations from both federal and local oversight agencies.
NOTE: Any Cincinnati Children's investigator may request assistance from the Translational Research Trials Office; grant funding from the TRI (see below) is NOT a prerequisite to utilize the protocol development and regulatory compliance services. To have your clinical study be considered, please download, complete, and email the Translational Research Trials Office intake form to carol.johnson@cchmc.org.
Support
The Translational Research Initiative at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center encourages and supports researchers and clinicians undertaking translational research projects and contributes to appropriate completion of these trials. Financial support is provided through the Translational Research Initiative. This is an annual competition managed by the Translational Research Trials Office, which provides grants for the following:
- Preclinical and translational research projects
- Retreats
- Core facilities
- Sabbaticals
Preclinical research supported by the TRTO has so far involved the following Divisions at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center: Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Endocrinology, Experimental Hematology and Cancer Biology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, & Nutrition, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Molecular Immunology, Neonatology, Nephrology, Neurology, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Pediatric and Thoracic Surgery, Pulmonary Medicine, and Rheumatology.
Clinical trials facilitated by the TRTO have involved the following Divisions at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center: Allergy and Immunology, Experimental Hematology and Cancer Biology, Hematology/Oncology, and General and Community Pediatrics.
