Surgical Specialties Expanding
Effective January 2011, the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Program transitioned from the Division of Adolescent Medicine within the Department of Pediatrics to an independent division in the Department of Surgical Services. The division, under the direction of Lesley Breech, MD, continues to focus on the medical and surgical management of gynecological problems as well as the promotion of reproductive health in girls and young women.
Faculty members of the division are Breech, Leslie Ayensu-Coker, MD, and Jill Huppert, MD, MPH. The alignment with the Department of Surgical Services was designed to promote the growth of new surgical specialty areas, such as the Disorders of Sexual Development Program and the OncoFertility Program, by providing greater access to institutional resources.
Additional support for fellowship training was also a strong motivator as the division has one of only six fellowship training programs in North America. The transition to an independent division is anticipated to support the growth of the clinical enterprise and research opportunities while capitalizing on the program’s national recognition.
