Oversight of the regulatory, ethical and compliance aspects of all the research conducted at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is a complex multidimensional undertaking, and ORCRA divides the responsibility for managing these dimensions across five operational areas. Although collaboration and consultation among the areas is a daily occurrence, each program has primary responsibility for a specific regulatory or compliance area within the institution.
The Human Research Program facilitates the safe and ethical conduct of human research as defined by US Health and Human Services and Food and Drug Administration regulations and Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) standards as well as administers the Cincinnati Children’s Institutional Review Board (IRB).

The Research Biosafety Program supports laboratory and other research areas involving the use of rDNA and infectious agents as well as administers the Cincinnati Children’s Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).

The Research Compliance Program provides auditing, investigation, QA and educational project review in support of all other ORCRA program areas and with regard to all types of research conducted at Cincinnati Children’s.

The Animal Research Program collaborates with the Division of Veterinary Services to facilitate high-quality and ethical research involving vertebrate animals in compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) standards as well as supports the Cincinnati Children’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
