Mentored Patient-oriented Career Development Award (K23)

The Mentored Patient-oriented Career Development Award (K23) Award is administered by the National Center for Research Resources, under guidelines of the National Institutes of Health.

Under the guidelines for the K23 Award, candidates must hold an MD, DDS, or equivalent degree and have completed their clinical training, including specialty training. The program requires candidates to spend 75 percent of their time in research career development and clinical research under the supervision of a qualified mentor.

If successful, the candidate may receive up to five years of support with a maximum allowable salary of $75,000 annually and up to $25,000 per year for other expenses, such as tuition, research expenses, travel, and statistical services. The K23 Award is a highly attractive source of salary support for young faculty dedicated to pursuing a career in clinical research.

The latest K23 Award guidelines incorporate the old Clinical Association Physician (CAP) Award and the Minority Clinical Associate Physician (MCAP).
