Bio

Judy A. Bean, PhD, MPH, is director of the Biostatistics Program at Children's Hospital Medical Center. She has more than 25 years of experience in research and management.

Dr. Bean has consulted and collaborated with clinicians and basic scientists on data management, design and analyses in various areas, including cancer epidemiology, cancer prevention trials, clinical trial in liver transplantation, clinical trial on caregivers of Alzheimer's disease, marine toxins, identification of teens at high risk of AIDS, mortality and cancer incidence in pesticides applicators.

Currently, Dr. Bean is the statistician for the General Clinical Research Center at Children's Hospital and University of Cincinnati Medical School and the statistician on a project concerning imaging of brains in children. She is collaborating on the establishment of a rotavirus surveillance system and the effects of microsomal epoxide hydrolase polymorphism on pregnancy outcomes in carbamazepine-treated patients.

Dr. Bean's main research focus is in general statistical methods, sample surveys, environmental epidemiology and cancer epidemiology. She has conducted studies concerning health effects on pollutants in drinking water as well as developed an approach to sample size determination for case-control studies.

Dr. Bean has served on three study sections for National Institutes of Health (NIH) and currently is on the CDRC Study Section, Communication Disorders.

Dr. Bean has finished six years on the Drinking Water Committee of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Dr. Bean is currently a member of the NSABP Data and Safety Monitoring Committee and on the Editorial Board of Statistical Methods in Medical Research.
