Functional Brain Imaging
Functional neuroimaging in pediatrics continues to be a major focus of research in the Imaging Research Center at Cincinnati Children's Research Foundation. A dedicated 3T MRI scanner for research in pediatrics has been a key component in the development of this program.
New projects utilizing functional imaging have recently been funded by the NIH and private foundations this year for projects involving the use of fMRI for studies of language development, cognitive impairment associated with lead exposure, auditory representation in the brains of children with severe hearing impairment, bipolar disorder, perinatal stroke, and brain reorganization during rehabilitation in children with traumatic brain injury.
The fMRI studies are directed by IRC faculty (Drs. Holland and Schmithorst) and focus primarily on brain development and developmental disorders. Additionally, collaborations with researchers at CHMC and UCMC in psychiatry, psychology, neurology, and neurosurgery involve the use of fMRI in adult brain physiology and diseases.
