Pediatric Pharmacology Research Unit

Overview

The Pediatric Pharmacology Research Unit (PPRU) at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center facilitates and promotes pediatric labeling of new drugs or drugs already on the market. The PPRU works to promote and demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of drugs used in children of all ages by applying evidence-based pediatric pharmacology. Through this process, the unit strives to foster cooperative and complementary research efforts among academia, industry and health professionals.

The PPRU achieves this by:

  • Performing drug trials to gather evidence necessary for FDA approval of drugs that represent a meaningful therapeutic benefit over existing therapies of drugs used in life-threatening conditions.
  • Promoting and performing studies to provide the scientific basis for pediatric clinical trial methodology.
  • Performing translation research studies that would lead to the development of newer therapeutic modalities and/or optimal drug therapy in children.
  • Undertaking studies of the mechanisms of drug action and disposition in infants and children.

The PPRU at Cincinnati Children's is one of 13 PPRUs established by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in response to the need for appropriate drug therapy for pediatric patients. The 13 PPRUs form a network of research centers for federally sponsored pediatric pharmacology studies across the United States. The network contains 160,000 pediatric inpatients a year and 2.3 million outpatient pediatric contacts per year.
