Adolescent Medicine

Overview

The Division of Adolescent Medicine at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati is dedicated to serving the health care needs of adolescents and to providing research and teaching that improves adolescent health in the community, nation, and world.

It is historically unique as a founding academic program in adolescent medicine. Established strengths include national recognition as a leader in interdisciplinary education, primary care for high-risk youth, and adolescent gynecology.

The foundation is set for growth in three areas:

  • Research in adolescent health services and outcomes,
  • Consultation services for adolescents with complex illness,
  • Community partnerships to promote adolescent capacity.

The division hired three new academic faculty and eight new support staff during the year. The division's space in Location E (Pavilion Building) was renovated and expanded. Satellite services in medical consultation were implemented at Outpatient Services -- Mason. The division was named the 1999 Kindervelt recipient and worked with Kindervelt representatives to develop a strategic plan for adolescent health education at the neighborhood level.

Current Research

Faculty members in the Division of Adolescent Medicine are conducting a number of studies that focus on understanding the healthy development of teenagers, risk and preventive health behaviors, prevention of different diseases and improving health care quality for teens with chronic disease. Currently the Division has over $1.5 million in funds from outside Cincinnati Childrens from the National Institutes of Health, private foundations, or pharmaceutical companies.
