Adolescent Medicine

Jessica A. Kahn, MD, MPH

Dr. Jessica Kahn is the director of trainee research in the Division of Adolescent Medicine. In this capacity, she supervises research projects conducted by students, residents, clinical fellows and research fellows.

Her research focuses on the prevention of disease caused by a common sexually transmitted infection, human papillomavirus (HPV). Infection with this virus may cause genital warts, abnormal Pap tests, or cervical cancer. She is conducting research studies that examine risk factors for HPV infection in young women, the role of HPV testing in cervical cancer screening programs, the feasibility of self-testing for HPV, and the psychosocial impact of HPV and Pap test results in adolescents. She has developed educational protocols to teach adolescents about HPV infection and cervical cancer prevention. Dr. Kahn has been involved in studies of HPV vaccines and is conducting studies of health care providers to examine their attitudes about vaccines for HPV and other sexually transmitted infections. These research projects are funded by the National Institutes of Health (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases).

Dr. Kahn also is interested in cancer prevention behaviors in adolescents. She is conducting research to determine predictors of behaviors that might prevent cervical, skin, and lung cancer, with the ultimate goal of improving prevention efforts. This work is funded by the American Cancer Society.
