Research in the Division
The research program within the Division of Adolescent Medicine represents primarily three cohesive foci of research; Reproductive Health (Kahn, Huppert, Widdice, and research fellow Mullins), Biobehavioral Aspects of Puberty (Biro, Dorn, Hillman, and research fellows Negriff and Shenk), and Health Outcomes/Quality Improvement (Britto, Braverman); additionally, clinical trials are conducted under Dr Spigarelli. Within these foci, investigators utilize sophisticated qualitative and quantitative research methods, an array of statistical techniques ranging from simple to complex, as well as innovative technology to answer questions pertaining to health outcomes, health-related behavior, and pubertal maturation. Having these foci has also facilitated research training of Adolescent Medicine Fellows, directing them into a defined arena in order to more easily accomplish their scholarly activities. These foci have facilitated recruitment of psychology fellows as well as new faculty members into the Division. Dr. Lorah Dorn serves as Director of Research in the Division.
Despite the vacillation of available research dollars, the career development of faculty investigators in the Division has been quite strong. The faculty in the Division during the 2003-2008 who have identified research as their career priorities have received highly competitive awards beyond the NIH funding mechanisms. Dr. Kahn received a prestigious award from the WHO. She serves as a Principal Investigator for an international collaboration of a Global HPV vaccine network. From internal funding mechanisms Drs. Kahn and Huppert each received the Trustee Award, the two year Schmidlapp Women’s Faculty Scholar Award was given to Dr. Kahn, and Drs. Britto and Huppert each received an Outcomes Research Award through CCHMC. Through the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Widdice received the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) Award.
