Alternative Medical Techniques and Sedation

The new areas of activity of the Department of Anesthesia at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati focus on alternative medical techniques and sedation.
The sedation pilot program for the Division of Hematology/Oncology was deemed successful and has been instituted as a functioning program with the completion of sedation areas next to the operating room and post-anesthesia care unit. These new areas enable patients to have their procedures done without changing clothes or disrupting other clinical functions. The proximity of the post-anesthesia care unit aids in the post-sedation care of these patients and in the speedy discharge of sedated patients.
The Pain Management Program, begun approximately one year ago, has been extremely successful. The arrival of Kenneth R. Goldschneider, M.D., to direct the Pain Management Division of the department has resulted in the development of a pain management clinic, as well as enhancement of acute and chronic pain management services. Dr. Goldschneider's services are augmented by pediatric nurse practitioners, physical therapists and psychologists in a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain problems. The clinic has grown steadily and should prove to be an extremely popular resource within the institution for both in-house and community referral.
