Jodie Duffy, PhD is Co-Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Research Laboratory in the Division of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The laboratory focuses its studies on ischemia and reperfusion injury associated with cardiopulmonary bypass during repair of congenital heart disease.
Approximately 1 in 125 children born in the U.S. have a congenital heart defect. Many of these children are required to undergo open heart surgery within the first few weeks of life. These procedures often subject the infant to cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA). While these procedures are essential to save the child's life, they also cause injury to the myocardium during ischemic periods and/or reperfusion of the heart.
The research group currently has several projects underway investigating reoxygenation and reperfusion injury associated with cardiopulmonary bypass during repair of congenital heart disease and cardiac transplantation. The development of novel interventions to reduce morbidity from pediatric cardiac surgery is limited without understanding the regulatory mechanisms associated with reperfusion injury. The long-term goal of our research group is to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with surgical repair of congenital heart disease by identifying potential therapeutic interventions to alleviate injury.
The important combination of clinical investigations, animal model studies, and basic cellular research provides the greatest opportunity for translation of data into solutions for problems confronting cardiothoracic surgery patients. Strong funding for the group's research is supported through a number of sponsors.
