Research Highlights
Research has continued to be active in the Division of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, part of The Heart Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
The lab of Jeffrey M. Pearl, MD, and Jodie Duffie, PhD, continues its studies of hypoxia / reoxygenation injury and inflammatory mediator activation associated with cardiopulmonary bypass support. Their lab has received funding through an NIH RO1 grant.
Pirooz Eghtesady, MD, PhD, has successfully established a research laboratory focusing on the creation and ultimate treatment of hypoplastic left heart syndrome in fetal sheep model. He has performed over 50 fetal animal experiments to date and received a young investigator award by the section on cardiology and cardiac surgery at the annual American Academy of Pediatrics meeting.
The Division continues to collaborate on a number of clinical research projects with other members of The Heart Center, including:
- Cardiologists
- Intensivists
- Anesthesiologists
The projects vary from heterogeneity catecholamine in patients undergoing cardiac repairs to a project analyzing different schedules for all pain medicines to maximize patient comfort after cardiac surgery, and studies to evaluate novel approaches to assess renal function following cardiac surgery.
