Parent-Child Interaction Therapy Applications (PCIT-A)
Explanation | Training l Requirements l Evidence-Based and Evidence-Informed Model Trainings l Additional Information
Explanation
The first model replicated by the Trauma Treatment Training Center (TTTC), formerly the Trauma Treatment Replication Center (TTRC), at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center was Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). PCIT was selected based on a focus group discussion in November 2002 with the TTTC and representatives from seven local mental health provider agencies. Discussions focused on:
- Agency need
- Clinical effectiveness
- Agency costs and resources
- Reimbursement potential
- Client population
In June 2003, the TTTC began conducting site visits and giving presentations on PCIT to interested local agencies and began offering PCIT training at no cost due to their NCTSN grant from August 2003 through September 2005.
PCIT is an evidence-based treatment model with highly specified, step-by-step, live-coached sessions with the parent or caregiver and the child. The intervention uses a two-step approach:
- Child-Directed Interaction -- relationship enhancement
- Parent-Directed Interaction -- child behavior management
Originally, PCIT was developed for children aged 2-7 with disruptive behaviors and their caregivers. PCIT-A has been increasingly utilized with families in which children have been maltreated or exposed to domestic violence. PCIT-A training can be adapted for children aged 7-12 and for nonfamily caregivers, such as foster parents, residential treatment center staff, Head Start teachers, and others.
