Stem Cell Biology

Stem Cell Biology Program

Stem Cell Biology is an area of focus for the Division of Experimental Hematology and Cancer Biology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Researchers know that the production of billions of blood cells each hour is required to maintain normal health. Although a great deal is understood about the factors controlling the final steps of this production leading to mature neutrophils or red blood cells, initial steps involving the survival, proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells are incompletely understood.

In part, this is due to the infrequent number of the hematopoietic stem cells  estimated to be 1 in 100,000 nucleated cells of the bone marrow. The Stem Cell Program of the Experimental Hematology and Cancer Biology Division is studying the biology of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells to understand the factors regulating the normal proliferation and differentiation of these cells and determinants of abnormal differentiation and growth in leukemia.

New knowledge gained from these studies will have important implications for understanding pathological conditions associated with genetic diseases and for designing improved methods to grow and expand these cells in the laboratory.
