Education
The Division of General and Community Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has continued to expand its community-based educational experiences for both residents and medical students, while strengthening the curriculum of its medical-center-based fellowship inpatient, and primary care programs.
Mission
The mission of the Education Section of the Division of General & Community Pediatrics is to promote and model life-long, self-directed learning in the field of primary care pediatrics in an environment that values excellence, integrity, respect, diversity, and collaboration. The educational goals are:
- To improve child health by training students, residents, and fellows in the principles and practice of pediatric primary care
- To enhance and expand the teaching skills of local and regional faculty through faculty development in teaching
- To argument the filed of medical education nationally through the development and promotion of formal, post-graduate instruction in teaching skills
- To validate current and new educational methods through research in pediatric medical education
The research training program in General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine is a three-year fellowship offered jointly by Cincinnati Children's and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The program provides training in general pediatric, adolescent medicine to physicians and other scientists who desire to excel in child health research and become leaders in public health and academic medicine.
The program emphasizes skills relevant to the conduct of research, the preparation of grant proposals and publications and the presentation of scientific data. Additionally, there is a focus on training Fellows to teach and for Clinicians, enhancement of their clinic and teaching skills. Fellows will devote 80% or more of their time to research activities.

Faculty Development Program
Through both medical-center-based and community-based programs, residents and students learn critical skills in general care and behavioral medicine. Division faculty, led by Raymond Baker, M.D., have developed and initiated, in collaboration with several other divisions, a faculty development program focused on teaching. The MEDALS (Medical Educator Development and Learning Studies) program, comprised of five levels of training, includes education development and medical education research for residents, fellows, community practitioners, faculty and subspecialists.
Pediatric Primary Care Track in Residency Program
The Pediatric Primary Care track of the Pediatric Residency Training Program at Cincinnati Children's began in July 1997 with a grant from the Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services Administration, Raymond Baker, MD, project director. Five residents each year are selected for this track, which runs in parallel with the general pediatrics residency program.
The primary care track emphasizes the principles and practice of pediatric primary care, including health maintenance and preventive medicine, behavioral and developmental pediatrics, comprehensive care of the chronically ill and multiply-handicapped child, and care for underserved populations. The training program fulfills all institutional and program requirements of the ACGME for residency education in general pediatrics, but is specifically designed to prepare residents for careers as practicing pediatricians and for further training in academic primary care pediatrics.
