A1R / 1000 Partnership
Overview
A1R/1000 is a partnership for Asthma Improvement and Resources (A1R) with the aim of eliminating unnecessary hospitalizations and emergency department visits for children with asthma in North Carolina. According to the NC Center for Health Statistics, the current hospitalization rate for childhood asthma is 2.2/1000 (over 200 hospitalizations per 100,000). The goal of A1R/1000 is to have only 1 asthma-related hospitalization per 1,000 children per year.
A long-term goal of A1R/1000 is to reduce pediatric asthma-related hospitalizations to less than one per 1000 children per year. At both the state and AHEC levels, this will require a 50% or greater reduction in such hospitalizations. Several counties, however, have already made excellent progress toward this goal: Moore County was below the target in 2003 and Pitt County was close behind. These counties clearly demonstrate that this degree of improvement is possible. Currently, Charlotte AHEC and Southern Regional AHEC are participating in A1R/1000 to support practices striving to make this happen.
