Overview
We are interested in research on viral gastroenteritis in children and adults, including the human calicivirus (mainly norovirus) and rotavirus. We have broad interests on the diagnosis, classification, immunology, molecular epidemiology, host-pathogen interaction and receptors, pathogenesis, genetics and evolution. Our long-term goal is to develop a strategy to cure or prevent the infection and illness by these viruses. The recent finding of the association of human histo-blood types in the host range of noroviruses is a significant breakthrough which may result in development of antiviral or vaccine against these viruses. Our group also is interested in a study of the human milk in protection against viral gastroenteritis in breast fed infants. Human milk is a natural gift from mothers to their children and contains valuable elements in protection against variable infectious diseases including gastroenteritis. Characterization of these elements would also result in development of strategy against diseases caused by these pathogens.
