Neonatology

Overview

The Division of Neonatology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, part of the Section of Neonatology, Perinatal and Pulmonary Biology:

  • Manages the clinical care of neonates
  • Teaches fellows and residents
  • Conducts research regarding neonatal disorders and their prevention

The Regional Center for Newborn Intensive Care (RCNIC) at Cinicinnati Children's is one of the largest, most sophisticated intensive care units for newborns in the United States.

The Division of Neonatology provides 24-hour clinical coverage for three Cincinnati area Level III Newborn Intensive Care Units (at Cincinnati Children's, University Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital) and seven Level II Special Care Nurseries. We also provide medical leadership for all 10 nurseries and work collaboratively with local physicians and advanced practice nurses to significantly decrease neonatal mortality in the region.

The physicians from the Division of Neonatology also manage a growing volume of normal newborn care at nine Cincinnati area hospitals. The Division of Neonatology provides:

Follow-up clinics at Cincinnati Children's and Good Samaritan Hospital, staffed by Division of Neonatology physicians, care for babies who have ongoing and often complex medical and developmental needs. These clinics also serve as a resource for primary care physicians in the community who assume the management of these infants.

Research

Neonatology research activities are closely integrated into the Division of Neonatology, Perinatal and Pulmonary Biology, with interaction in neonatal lung disease and surfactant homeostasis. Perinatal research is an officially designated major focus area for the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Cincinnati Children's has a National Institutes of Health Perinatal Research Training Grant, which is open to fellows in ten disciplines interested in perinatal developmental biology. We lead an active three-year fellowship program in neonatology that leads to board certification for our trainees.
