Overview
The faculty in the Division of Nephrology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center provide diagnostic and treatment services to infants and children with a variety of disorders of the urinary tract, undertake basic and clinical research into the mechanisms underlying such disorders and provide training to physicians, other scientists and the community at large.
The Researchers

Research in the division closely parallels the types of problems which bring children to our clinics. About half of children with end-stage renal disease, for example, have congenital anomalies. Larry Patterson, MD, is developing a research program in conjunction with Steven Potter, PhD, to examine the developmental processes which may underlie these anomalies.
In both children and adults, single gene mutations give rise to a wide variety of renal disorders, many of which cause renal failure. John Bissler, MD, studies the ways in which mutations occur that disrupt the normal genes leading to disease. Understanding such mechanisms may ultimately lead to preventive strategies.
In older children and adults, inflammatory disease of the kidneys, especially those mediated by abnormal regulation of the immune system, cause considerable morbidity and mortality. The regulation of expression and function of a variety of inflammatory proteins is the basis for a variety of projects by Kamyar Zahedi, PhD.
Many children with renal disease also develop hypertension. Undrstanding hypertension in children with renal disease is the special focus of Mark Mitsnefes, MD. In conjunction with Stephen R. Daniels, MD, PhD, Dr. Mitsnefes is exploring the disease and reversibility of damage caused by pediatric hypertension.
