RA Educational Seminars

Research Assistants are strongly encouraged to attend monthly RA seminars which are designed to assist them in their current position and with career planning. At these seminars, a variety of educational topics are presented. Because these seminars are educational and will contribute to an RA's professional development, they can be included on resumes and graduate school applications. These seminars will also provide RA's with a chance to meet fellow RA's and faculty in psychology and in other divisions. These relationships can be a valuable resource for information about research, graduate schools, and careers.

The following are examples of topics covered in RA Seminars:

  • Data analysis and SPSS
  • Cleaning Data and Preliminary Analyses

This research experience will provide training on several projects related to sickle cell disease, social phobia, teen pregnancy, and premature birth. The student will also be involved in community research being conducted in collaboration with Head Start, FamiliesFORWARD, and United Way. The student will be trained and involved in database design, data management, and data analysis, and may have opportunities to assist with survey development and program evaluation assessments. There also may be opportunities to observe medical and psychological assessment and treatment, and to learn about anthropometric measurement in chronically ill children. Because this research project is aimed at improving physical and behavioral health outcomes in children from ethnically and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds, the student should have interest in and be sensitive to the needs of this population.

This project may be of interest to students in Medicine, Psychology, Sociology, Public Health or related fields. Students who desire experience in medical or psychological research, who plan to complete medical school or graduate work in the social science field, and who are interested in working with children and families of color are ideal candidates.
