Meet the Lab Members
Susannah Coaston

Susannah Coaston is a first year Masters student in Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Cincinnati. She received her BS in Psychology from Xavier University in May 2003. Susannah has worked on various program evaluation projects including FamiliesFORWARD, Hamilton County Family Violence Prevention Project, Glad House and Cincinnati Public Schools. She has also assisted with research projects in the following areas:
- sickle cell disease
- social anxiety
- breast cancer
- fibromyalgia
- childhood obesity
- Spina Bifida and
- non-verbal learning disabilities.
In the future, Susannah hopes to become a vocational counselor for young adults.

Janelle Hines

Janelle Hines is a second year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Cincinnati. She received her BS in Psychology from Xavier University. Janelle has worked on various program evaluation projects including FamiliesFORWARD after school programs, Talbert House Project Pass, and Cincinnati Public Schools Head Start. She has also assisted with research projects in the area of sickle cell disease including the STRONG program, Nickens study and the multi-site focus group study.
Janelle is currently working on her dissertation which will examine complementary alternative medicine use in children with Sickle Cell Disease. Her long term research interests are in developing culturally-relevant health prevention programs for youth.

Alisha Nichols

Alisha Nichols is the Outreach Coordinator and Program Evaluation Administrator for INNOVATIONS. She received her BA in Psychology and Spanish from Miami University in May 2001 and her MA in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in May 2004. Alisha worked as a Research Assistant in the Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology at CCHMC in 2001-2002. For the past year, she served as Program Manager for the Career and Employment Academy of the Communities In Schools Program in Charlotte, NC. Prior to that, she was the Lead Counselor for the Mayor's Youth Employment Program.
Alisha has skills and experience in budget preparation, conflict resolution, event coordination, lecturing, personnel administration, research and program evaluation. In her role as Outreach Coordinator, Alisha will assist programs in measuring their impact on the community. She will also focus on helping the community utilize program evaluation research to inform public policy.

Gloria Oliver-Carpenter, PhD

Dr. Gloria Oliver Carpenter is currently a postdoctoral fellow in pediatric psychology. Her funding is from a T32 training grant in Child Behavior and Nutrition. She obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1999 and her PhD from Miami University of Oxford, Ohio in 2005. Dr. Carpenter completed her clinical internship at CCHMC in 2005.
Dr. Carpenter's main area of interest is in the relationship between environmental correlates, family functioning, coping with a chronic illness and their impact on health and nutrition outcomes. Dr. Carpenter is also interested in understanding comorbid conditions in ethnic minority children, and children at-risk for physical and mental health disabilities. She is currently working with Dr. Monica Mitchell on phase 2 of a study examining nutritional status and depression in children with sickle cell disease. She is also actively working with the INNOVATIONS program to understand program evaluation and public policy research related to schools and non-profit community agencies.

Natasha Buchanan

Natasha Buchanan graduated from the University of Cincinnati in December of 2004 with a MA in Clinical Psychology and is currently working on her PhD in Clinical Psychology. She is a research assistant with INNOVATIONS where she is responsible for analysis and conceptualization of various program evaluation contracts. Through this position, Natasha is developing skills that will assist her in future career endeavors in the field of pediatric psychology and program evaluation.
In addition to her work with Monica Mitchell, Natasha is also a graduate research assistant for the evaluation of girls!CAN, Inc., a program evaluation contract overseen by Drs. Lisa Mills and Kathy Burklow at Children's. She enjoys the work that she does and is using data collected from this project for her dissertation, which focuses on efficacy in pre-adolescent girls. In the fall, Natasha will continue her work with INNOVATIONS and will begin working in the Division of Developmental Disabilities, where here duties will include: conducting psychological assessments and research in the area of developmental disabilities.

Summer Students
Olivia Davis is a second year Master student in Clinical Psychology at Wheaton College in Illinois. She received a BA in Psychology from Mary Baldwin College in Virginia in May of 2004. This is Olivia's third year working in the lab and has contributed to projects for INNOVATIONS, Sickle Cell Disease, and the Hamilton County Family Violence Prevention Program. Olivia has enjoyed getting multi-faceted, hands-on experience in research to compliment her academic studies.
Sarah Theodore is an undergraduate student at The University of Georgia in Athens, studying psychology and advertising with the goal of obtaining a doctorate in psychology. This is her second summer in the lab. Last summer she was an intern for the Sickle Cell Summer Program and was involved with the STRONG study. She is currently working on program evaluation for Cincinnati Public Schools Alternative to Suspension and Expulsion Programs.
Layci Calloway is an undergraduate student in the department of communications at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She has been involved with the STRONG study, and is currently helping Dr. Mitchell with program evaluation work for FamiliesFORWARD.
DeAnna Owens is a rising high school senior at Princeton High School here in Cincinnati. She is a summer intern for the Sickle Cell Summer Program. Her plans for after high school consist of attending Ohio University in Athens, Ohio or Hampton University in Virginia majoring in Pre-Medicine and then attending medical school.
