Sickle Cell Disease Family Research Day

The Sickle Cell Disease Family Research Day was held in June 2005 at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and August 2005 at Columbus Children's Hospital. Approximately 200 plus family members came to interact, enjoy lunch, and learn about/ contribute to research in the area of Sickle Cell Disease. Participants also received a formal presentation of the results of the multi-site focus group study which had been presented at the 27th Annual Meeting of the National Sickle Cell Disease Program in Los Angeles, California. Another Family Research Day is scheduled in September 2005 at Cleveland Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

National Sickle Cell Disease Program 2005

The Cincinnati Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center hosted the 28th Annual Meeting of the National Sickle Cell Disease Program in April, 2005. This National Institutes of Health (NIH) - sponsored conference brings together basic and clinical scientists, clinicians, nurses, social workers, counselors, psychologists and others interested in sickle cell disease to report on the latest research and treatment for this disorder. Highlights of the meeting include:

  • Opening Reception at the National Underground Railroad Museum and Freedom Center;
  • Keynote addresses by Dr. Michael DeBaun (Washington University) and Dr. David Williams (CCHMC);
  • Plenary sessions chaired by Dr. Marilyn Gaston and Dr. Clarice Reid;
  • Over 200 oral and poster presentations;
  • Black Tie Gala at Paul Brown Stadium.

Topics included gene therapy, CNS disease in sickle cell anemia, hydroxyurea and other new therapies, nitric oxide metabolism, vascular biology, transfusion and oral iron chelation therapies, health maintenance in sickle cell disease, and psychosocial functioning of patients and families.
