Our lab is dedicated to understanding child and family coping with chronic illness, and their relation to health status and outcomes, particularly in African-American populations. Currently, we are conducting studies in the area of Sickle Cell Disease.

STRONG

  • K01 Career Development Grant to understand physical /nutritional health as it relates to mental health (anxiety, depression, child functioning, parental mental health, etc.). 
  • Looks at growth and nutrition in children with Sickle Cell Disease. Includes physical assessment, nutritional assessment, vitamin and mineral analysis, behavioral assessment, and family interviews.

Nickens Project

  • Multi-site study to understand coping in children with Sickle Cell Disease, effectiveness of strategies and parents' perception of whether strategies are active, passive, or negative.
  • Also understand coping as it relates to adherence and the use of complimentary and alternative medicines. 
  • Focus groups in Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland.

Diet Diary Comparison Study

  • Study to compare two diet diary data collection methods (traditional weighed and randomized phone recall).  
  • Participants complete a survey after both methods that assesses perceptions of accuracy, ease, and eating habits using these two methods for detail, calorie count, number of times a day participants ate, and data analysis power.

Improving Adherence to Sickle Cell Therapy

  • Study to assess adherence to clinic appointments and hydroxyurea in children and adolescents with sickle cell disease.
  • Participants will complete adherence measures and a clinic-based intervention to improve their adherence.

Ameliorating Attention Problems in Children with Sickle Cell Disease

  • Study to assess the efficacy of using methylphenidate to treat attention and behavioral difficulties in children with sickle cell disease with identified problems.
  • Participants will complete measures of memory, attention and concentration with and without the medication.
