Pediatric Pain Research Program

The Powers Lab is focused on three pediatric pain conditions — headache, sickle cell disease and juvenile fibromyalgia. 

Our research, as well as studies conducted in collaboration with other faculty members in the Division of Psychology, has resulted in numerous publications and abstracts. Collaborative projects include:

  • a multi-site clinical trial to test drug and non-drug treatment for juvenile fibromyalgia

  • a translational research study on the genomics of pediatric headache
    PI: Andrew D. Hershey
  • and multi-site studies combining qualitative and quantitative methods to inform development of culturally-aware and family-centered interventions for pediatric sickle cell pain
    PI: Monica J. Mitchell
  • a randomized clinical study on children with chronic daily headaches

The pediatric pain research program has been supported by the:

  • National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disorders (NIAMS);
