Walz Lab

Nicolay Chertkoff Walz, PhD, is a pediatric neuropsychologist and assistant professor in the Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology. She is the recent recipient of an early career development award funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and supported by the CCHMC GCRC through a CReFF award. The research plan for the award, titled "Social development following preschool brain injury," is designed to examine short- and long-term social outcomes and to test a model of the development of social competence following traumatic brain injury during the preschool years. Dr. Walz hopes that her current and future research will lead to an understanding of the mechanisms by which TBI in young children leads to social difficulties and provide a basis for designing interventions to improve social competence.

She is also a co-investigator on another NICHD funded study, titled "Child and family sequelae of preschool brain injury," which examines the short- and long-term effects of TBI on young children and their families.

Finally, Dr. Walz is completing analyses and publication of previously funded research on social and behavioral competence in children with a variety of neurodevelopment disorders (e.g., spina bifida, Angelman syndrome).
