Clinical Research
In the last year, clinical research in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine has focused on:
- Evaluating potential new treatments and therapies that will help control the disease and improve quality of life for children and adults with Cystic Fibrosis (CF);
- Obtaining a better understanding of how CF affects the body. CCHMC is participating in severa studies that are looking for genes (other than the CF gene) that may affect how much or little lung disease people with CF have;
- Creating new outcome measures (ways to evaluate how patients respond to different treatments). For example, researchers at CCHMC are involved in determining the best way to measure lung function in infants - until recently, only available in children over 5 years of age.
The Cystic Fibrosis Center has an active clinical research program and has participated in over two dozen clinical projects over the last several years. Research opportunities are available for all individuals with CF, regardless of age or symptoms. For specifics about volunteer opportunities, families should speak to their primary CF physician or the nurse who coordinates the Research Program in Pulmonary Medicine.
