Pediatric TBI: Outcomes, Influences, and Interventions
Shari Wade, PhD, associate professor and Director of Research in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, is currently involved in three federally-funded research studies investigating child and family outcomes, parent-child interaction, and models of family intervention following pediatric head injury. Her overarching goals are to understand social environmental influences on child recovery following pediatric brain injury and to develop theoretically and empirically driven interventions to facilitate adaptation.
The first study, titled "Child and Family Sequelae of Preschool Brain Injury," is funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and provides a comprehensive examination of the effects of TBI on young children and their families with particular emphasis on the interrelationship between social environmental factors and child recovery and subsequent development.
Dr. Wade's second study, also funded by NICHD, tests the efficacy of an online family problem-solving intervention to improve caregiver and child function following pediatric TBI. Drawing upon her previous research – including findings from a randomized trial of a face-to-face intervention to be published in the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation – Dr. Wade crafted an online intervention program coupling self-guided web pages with concurrent therapist-family videoconferences.
The third study, titled "A Trial of Two Online Interventions for Child Brain Injury," sets the successful on-line intervention from the previous study against a case-management online discussion group in a trial of efficacy and comparative successes. In the future, Dr. Wade intends to continue to focus on interventions to improve both child and family adaptation following TBI.
