Atam Dhawan
Credentials
Atam P. Dhawan (Ph.D., University of Manitoba, Canada; Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering).
Dr. Dhawan is an expert in medical imaging and image analysis for computer aided diagnosis. He has invented a noninvasive optical imaging device, the Nevoscope, to obtain three-dimensional views of a skin lesion transilluminated through a fiber optics directed visible light source. Dr. Dhawan is experienced in the development and use of knowledge-based image analysis and interpretation systems to analyze biomedical images for diagnostic and prognostic features.
Special Interests
His research interests are in biomedical image processing, medical imaging, computer vision, genetic algorithms, artificial intelligence and neural networks. Dr. Dhawan received the First Independent Research Support and Transition (FIRST) award from the National Institutes of Health on his study on the Nevoscope. His professional affiliations include the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Biomedical Engineering Society, assistant editor of the IEEE Transactions on Rehabilitation Engineering, and member of numerous NIH special Study sections and NSF Review Panels. Dr. Dhawan's engineering perspective and expertise in the development of medical imaging technology for skin based research and applications add significantly to the measurement capabilities of the Skin Sciences Institute.
