William Pickens
Credentials
B.S.: University of Cincinnati
Mr. Pickens is an expert in epidermal barrier development and the role of epidermal growth factor in perinatal development. He has established the neonatal rat as a model system for human skin and has used it to increase the understanding of the epidermal barrier. His professional associations include the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, the International Society for Bioengineering and the Skin, and the American Society for Gravitation and Space Biology. Mr. Pickens' expertise in skin development and laboratory method development contributes significantly to the scientific credibility and practical skills of the Skin Sciences Institute.
Special Interests
Pickens is interested in the application of noninvasive biomedical sensing the quantitative measurement of skin properties. His work has established a new structure - function relationship in the newborn mammal, i.e., the skin surface hydrophobicity. He is currently investigating the effects of space flight and microgravity on fetal development through the first NIH-NASA evaluation of these effects.
