Nakafuku Lab

  • Neural Regeneration and Stem Cells

In parallel to our developmental studies, our laboratory has also been interested in developing novel strategies for treatment of neurological disorders.

The recent discovery of neural stem cells in the adult CNS has raised the possibility of repairing the damaged tissue by recruitment of their latent, endogenous regenerative potentials. We have recently demonstrated the first success of such an approach in a rat model of ischemic brain injury.

We are currently extending this regenerative approach to various types of disease models in rats and mice such as traumatic injury of the spinal cord, cerebral cortex and striatum.
