Weaver Lab Research

Tim Weaver has a long-standing interest in lung development and disease centered on the role of the type II epithelial cell in normal alveolar development and pathogenesis.
Current research projects in the lab are focused in three areas:
Pathogenesis of interstitial lung diseases: ILDs are a heterogeneous group of pathologies that include the lethal fibrotic disease idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Generation of an appropriate mouse model of IPF is the central focus of this project.
Protein misfolding and lung disease: The goals of this project are to identify the molecular components of cytoprotective pathways involved in the disposal of misfolded proteins and development of novel reagents to enhance rapid elimination of toxic peptide species.
Regulation of alveolar homeostasis: The goal of this project is to identify the molecular pathway by which type II cells “sense” alveolar surfactant pool size and subsequently adjust surfactant synthesis, secretion, recycling and degradation to maintain homeostasis.
