Kevin A. Hommel, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology and the Center for the Promotion of Treatment Adherence and Self-Management. Dr. Hommel's research focuses on adherence assessment methodology, behavioral treatment of nonadherence, health outcome, and quality of life in pediatric chronic illnesses, particularly in gastroenterologic diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Dr. Hommel's research is currently primarily funded by a K23 Career Development Award from NIH/NIDDK. Research being conducted for this grant utilizes a systematic approach to nonadherence treatment protocol development. The first study, now completed, identified patient and family reported barriers and facilitators of adherence to medication in IBD. This information was incorporated into the second study, which involves a randomized controlled clinical trial of a family-based group behavioral treatment protocol to improve adherence to oral medication in adolescents with IBD.

Dr. Hommel came to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he was an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology. He continues to collaborate with investigators at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia who focus on improving bone health in IBD and nutrition in cystic fibrosis.
