Center for Adherence Promotion and Self-Management Mission

The center has a broad-based mission to promote research, clinical care and training concerning treatment adherence and self-management in pediatric populations.

Research

The center's research mission includes measurement of adherence, testing causal models of adherence versus nonadherence, and evaluating interventions. Research initiatives will be generated by the center faculty in collaboration with other department faculty who have primary interests in treatment adherence and related research areas. In collaboration with department and university faculty, center faculty will develop and participate in pilot and feasibility studies relevant to its mission and develop federally funded research.

In addition to initiating research projects, center faculty will be collaborators (Co-PIs or consultants) on research initiated by other investigators.

Clinical Care and Quality Improvement

A second area of the center's mission will involve the development of innovative clinical services for children and adolescents and their families who present with salient problems in adherence to medical treatment. The center's clinical care initiatives will include measuring the outcomes of clinical intervention. Clinical consultations, assessments, and interventions of children, adolescents, and their families will be documented by comprehensive measures of adherence, illness management, and illness morbidity. The center's faculty and programs will be closely aligned with Cincinnati Children's initiatives on personalized medicine, shared decision-making, self-management, evidence-based medicine, and quality improvement.

Teaching and Training

A third core area of the center's mission involves teaching and training. Center faculty will provide mentorship and consultation for graduate students, fellows, and faculty who are conducting research related to adherence and related outcomes. Center faculty will develop specialized didactic training (lectures, seminars, and workshops) for graduate students, fellows, and faculty from a range of professional disciplines in specialized methodologies and intervention models relevant to research and clinical care concerning adherence to treatment.
