Asthma Innovation Lab Team

The team is comprised of physicians, nurses, a statistician, a research coordinator, education specialists, social workers, web editors, vice-presidents, a quality improvement consultant, parent representatives, and self-management coaches all who are passionate about providing the best quality of care to improve child health but also who love and embrace change and innovation.

Julianne Bick

After receiving her Bachelor's degree in English from Xavier University, Juli began her career in marketing as a copy editor and proofreader for print marketing materials. She transitioned to web writing, where she has spent the last 7 years, 5 of those years here at Cincinnati Children's. Juli is a parent of a child with multiple chronic illnesses. She is actively involved in many quality improvement teams where she is able to not only see things from the eyes of a Cincinnati Children's staff member, but also a Cincinnati Children's patient family. These teams include: Peri-Operative Family-Centered Care Team, A7 Neuroscience Family-Centered Care Team, Chronic Care Steering Committee, Online Community Committee, among others. Juli is a member of the Marketing and Communications Department at Cincinnati Children's.

Juli's role on the Asthma Innovation Lab Team is to develop and test ideas and implement, monitor and track research studies in the Lab. She leads the "Who We Are" Branding Initiative, which serves to understand what "innovation" means to teens and how to effectively communicate what we do and who we are to teens. She also is able to be a parent advisor to the team.

Maria Britto, MD, MPH

Dr. Britto received her MD from University of Virginia and her MPH in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina. She completed her residency in medicine and pediatrics at University of North Carolina Hospitals and was Chief Resident of Pediatrics at UNC Hospitals. She was honored as a Clinical Scholar as part of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar Program. Dr. Britto has been awarded "2004 Best Doctors" and "2005 Best Doctors". She is currently an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine in the Adolescent Medicine division.

Dr. Britto's special interests include chronic illnesses in adolescents, health care quality, quality of life of adolescents with chronic diseases, and health care preferences of adolescents with chronic diseases.

She is the backbone of the Center for Innovation in Chronic Disease Care and leads the Asthma Innovation Team. She is a critical source of knowledge, experience, insight and guidance for the Center and the Asthma Innovation Lab.

Terri Byczkowski, PhD

Dr. Byczkowski earned her PhD in Quantitative Analysis from the University of Cincinnati and her MBA from SUNY at Buffalo. Her expertise includes statistical process control, survey methods, experimental design and measurement for quality improvement. She is particularly interested in the use of control charts and experimental design in healthcare quality improvement work, and the measurement of patient experiences in order to improve family satisfaction with care. In her current role as the Assistant VP of Data Systems for Quality Improvement, manages a group of analysts, data managers and data collectors who support the hospital's performance improvement initiatives. She is able to provide consultation and guidance in tracking and monitoring outcome measures. Terri encourages the Asthma Innovation Lab Team members to analytically look at innovations in order to track improvements and progress.

Amy Chima

Amy earned her Bachelor in Economics from Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia and her MBA from Michigan State University. Amy comes from a background in management consulting.

She is the Quality Improvement Consultant on the Asthma Innovation Lab Team striving to challenge the team to make proactive changes and supporting them to determine plans and measurement outcomes to evaluate current projects and changes.

Dee Ellingwood

Dee began his tenure at Cincinnati Children's in 1997. In his role as the Senior Vice President in the Department of Planning and Business development, he oversees the strategic, business and long-term planning for the medical center. He serves on several local and state boards serving health care and development, including the Ohio Children's Hospital Association, the Greater Cincinnati Health Council, the Uptown Consortium and the Hoxworth Blood Center.

He is the Cabinet Champion for the Asthma Innovation Lab providing senior leadership support to the Team.

Jennifer Knopf

Jen received her Bachelor in Psychology from University of Kentucky and her Masters in Clinical Psychology from University of Dayton. At CCHMC, she is a Clinical Research Coordinator and sits, as the co-chair, on the Clinical Research Professionals Advisory Committee.

Jen is the primary party responsible for designing and planning the creative sessions for the Asthma Innovation Lab Team. She manages the relationship for the partnership with Cincinnati Bell and Intuit. She also manages the consumer segmentation study and ensures the project tracking and monitoring process is streamlined to quickly generate ideas and realize benefits.

Dave Krier

Dave graduated from University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor in Political Science before earning his Masters of Health Administration from The Ohio State University. His background includes healthcare consulting, project management, and planning and development. His current role, as the Assistant Vice President of Access Services, enables him to impact the patients' front-end experiences.

Dave's capacity on the Team involves developing accurate quality metrics and improvement initiatives in order to effectively track innovations and changes to the clinic flow; ultimately, changing the experience for patients with asthma and their families who come through the Asthma Innovation Lab.

Elizabeth Mathison

Elizabeth received her undergraduate degree from Miami University and her Master of Social Work from The Ohio State University. She has 11 years of experience at CCHMC, working with Hematology/Oncology division and the Center for Infants and Children with Special Needs. Prior to CCHMC, she practiced as a family therapist. Elizabeth is part of the Integrative Care Department as a Clinical Program Director. She specializes in care management.

On the Asthma Innovation Lab Team, Elizabeth works with Anita to provide self management coaching to patients. She helps to work with patients and families to understand their asthma and how to best manage their asthma on a day-to-day basis.

Dawn Nebrig

Dawn earned her Masters in Social Work from the University of North Carolina. She did her fellowship in Adolescent Health at CCHMC and is certified as a Licensed Independent Social Worker. At CCHMC, she is part of the Center for Professional Excellence/ Education.

Dawn acts as an advisor to the Asthma Innovation Lab Team by providing consultative advice related to self-management implementation, clinic flow, and testing action plans. She contributes to the group by providing innovative ideas around group facilitation and visits, as well as staff development.

Stacy Rechner

Stacy earned her Bachelor in Business from Miami University and is obtaining her MBA from Xavier University. Stacy's background is in healthcare management consulting, specifically process redesign and strategy development.

Stacy is the data analyst on the team and is responsible for tracking improvements through monitoring data. She supports the team through providing monthly and ad-hoc analyses to enable the team to identify effective innovations and generate ideas for new methods.

Anita Schambach

Anita earned her Bachelor in Nursing with a Minor in Psychology from the University of Kentucky, and then earned her Master of Health Science with a focus in education from Armstrong Atlantic State University. She is trained as a Health Coach and has attended training for the Stanford University Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. Anita is the Director of Integrative Care Management and specializes in the development of care management models and evidence-based/best practice self-management strategies and their incorporation into a holistic plan of care. Anita is the primary nurse responsible for the self-management coaching implementation in the AIL. She provides guidance to the team for the development of a chronic care self-management model and implementation techniques. Her hope is to be able to teach patients with asthma how to sufficiently and successfully manage their asthma in order to improve confidence and adherence.

Anna-Liisa Vockell

Anna-Liisa earned her Masters in Nursing from Georgia State University after graduating from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor in Nursing. She is currently a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in the Adolescent Medicine Department. Her passion of caring for adolescents with chronic diseases and interest in integrative medicine complement the Asthma Innovation Lab Team very well. Anna-Liisa is the PNP on the Team and truly cares about how her patients are dealing with daily challenges related to their asthma. She explores possibilities and builds relationships with patients in order to make their journey an easier one to manage.

Janet Wimberg

Janet is the parent of a chronically ill child and has been a member of the CCHMC Family Advisory Council since 2006. She is a member of the Chronic Care Steering Committee. As part of the Steering Committee, she is working with others to develop a Parent to Parent Matching Program which will be easily translated and adopted by other divisions and clinics as additional program offerings to families. She is a Parent Coordinator and part of the Asthma Innovation Lab, where she serves to enhance communication and track critical information gathered from the Lab. Her insights, not only as a team member but as a parent, help to bring a different perspective to the team encouraging innovative ideas that parents can relate to and find beneficial.

Michael Yi, MD, MSc

Dr. Yi earned his BA from University of Virginia. After graduating from the Medical College of Virginia he received training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He subsequently completed an Outcomes Research Fellowship in Cincinnati and attained a Masters in Epidemiology from the Harvard School for Public Health. He is currently an Associate Professor.

Dr. Yi's clinical and research interests include quality of life assessment, transitional care from pediatric to adult medical systems, and the study of relationships between mental health, social factors, spirituality/religion, and health outcomes in patients with chronic illnesses. Those interests enable him to have a broad insight into factors that influence patients' outcomes, and his goal is to help the individual use intrinsic and external resources to be able to actively manage their chronic illness.
