Overview
The Cincinnati Pediatric Research Group (CPRG) is a Midwest regional practice-based research network of more than 65 community child health care providers in more than 30 practices. Founded in 1996, the CPRG is based in Greater Cincinnati and is supported by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center as well as grants from various funding agencies.
The CPRG operates under the philosophy that practice-based pediatricians must have the latitude to determine the focus and design of studies conducted by the group. This philosophy fosters community participation and results in studies that are more meaningful and relevant to the region as a whole.
Pursuing projects with applications to clinical practice, the CPRG has completed studies in the areas of ADD/ADHD, otitis media, obesity and domestic violence. Current projects include the Symptom Surveillance Project; a soft-tissue infection study; a low-carbohydrate diet study in adolescents; and the distribution of a brochure addressing maternal depression. We collaborate across disciplines and institutions to utilize the academic resources available in the Cincinnati area. Current and past partnerships include: Cincinnati Health Department, University of Cincinnati, and the Cincinnati Nutrition Council.
All members are educated in the area of human research protection, and most have at least ten years of practice experience. Members practice in both urban and suburban locations and see patients from all socio-economic backgrounds. The demographic profile of patients seen by CPRG physicians is largely representative of the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan region, with 73% white, 17% black, 3% Asian or Pacific Islander and 7% of another race or multiple races. Most patients (55%) come in for an acute problem, while others come in for wellness, surgery follow-up and chronic care.
The CPRG originated and is now a participating member of the Ohio Pediatric Research Consortium (OPRC), a network of pediatric practice-based research networks located throughout Ohio. Via the OPRC, the CPRG has quarterly meetings with networks based in Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Toledo to facilitate collaborative research and information sharing for the benefit of Ohio's children.
