Meet the Teen-LABS Team

Made up of five clinical centers, the Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (Teen-LABS) consortium is investigating the short- and long-term safety and efficacy of bariatric surgery in teens. Meet the members of the research team:

Cathy Gibbs. Cathy Gibbs is the site coordinator for Teen-LABS at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Cathy works with Anita Courcoulas, MD, as well as other surgeons on the parent LABS study and related studies. All of these NIH studies are related to outcomes after bariatric surgery.
Bill Gourash. William Gourash, CRNP, MSN, is one of the site coordinator for Teen-LABS at the University ofPittsburgh Medical Center. He works with Anita Courcoulas, MD, as well as other surgeons on the parent LABS study and related studies. All of these NIH studies are related to outcomes after bariatric surgery.
Beverly Haynes. Beverly Haynes is the bariatric nurse coordinator for the Children's Health System in Birmingham, Alabama. She is also the nurse clinician for Mac Harmon, MD, and works closely with him in the bariatric surgery program.
Rosie Miller. Rosie (Rosemary) Miller, RN, CCRC, is a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator at Cincinnati Children's. Rosie is the Central Study Coordinator for the Teen-LABS Study working with Judy Bean, PhD, and the Data Coordinating Center and the Primary Investigator Thomas Inge, MD, PhD. She oversees the 5 sites conducting the Teen-LABS study.
Avani C. Modi, PhD. Avani C. Modi, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology at Cincinnati Children's and at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She is also a faculty member in the center for the Promotion of Adherence and Self Management at Cincinnati Children's. Dr. Modi's program of research focuses on adherence to pediatric medical regimens, including the measurement of adherence and identifying barriers to treatment. Dr. Modi, a Co-PI of this study, is interested in the measurement of adherence to vitamin supplementation for patients who have undergone bariatric surgery and its relation to nutritional complications.
Susanne Trout, RD, LD, IBCLC. Susanne Trout, RD, LD, IBCLC, is the site coordinator along with Trish Walters-Salas at Texas Children's Hospital and provides nutrition education for all potential candidates. Susanne has a BS in nutrition and food science from New Mexico State University. She completed her dietetic internship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Susanne is a registered dietitian and licensed in the State of Texas, Internationally Board Certified as a Lactation Consultant and Certified in Childhood and Adolescent Obesity. In addition to focusing on nutrition after gastric bypass in adolescents, Susanne specializes in premature infant nutrition and lactation consultation.
Trish Walters-Salas. Trish Walters-Salas is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing. At Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas, she is the nurse case manager for the Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program. She works with Michael Helmrath, MD, in collecting data and providing patient care for the Teen-LABS study.
Stavra A. Xanthakos, MD, MS. Stavra A. Xanthakos, MD, MS, is the medical director of the Comprehensive Weight Management Center at Cincinnati Children's and a member of the multidisciplinary team n HealthWorks! She joined the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in 2005, after completing her fellowship, chief residency and residency at Cincinnati Children's. Her research interests include the treatment and prevention of pediatric obesity, as well as identifying genetic and environmental risk factors for pediatric nonalcoholic fatty liver disease to enable better evaluation and treatment options.
