Research Study for Brothers and Sisters With Epilepsy
What is the purpose of this study?
Cincinnati Children’s is conducting a research study, sometimes known as a clinical trial or clinical study, to better understand what causes epilepsy and the role our genes play, which treatments will be more effective, and why some families have multiple relatives with seizures.
Who will be included in this study?
Children and adults up to 60 years old who have been diagnosed with epilepsy AND who have a brother or sister with epilepsy available for the study may be eligible to participate.
What is involved?
The study involves an initial two-hour period (over the phone or during a clinic visit). The following is a list of procedures that will take place during the study:
Participants will:
- Complete a questionnaire including medical history and family medical history
- Donate a blood sample (a clinical person can come to one’s home)
What are the benefits?
There are no direct benefits to your participation in this study. The information gathered from this study will serve as a national resource that may lead to new discoveries related to epilepsy. These discoveries may help to eventually develop new forms of therapy which may benefit people with epilepsy in the future.
Will I get all the facts about the study?
If you are interested in participating or having your child participate, you will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study. The form covers all of the procedures, the risks, the benefits, the pay, who to contact with questions or concerns and more. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that all of your questions are answered. Study procedures will not begin until you have signed this form and, if of age, your child has given at minimum his/her verbal agreement.
What are the risks and discomforts of the study?
As with any blood draw, there may be some discomfort or bruising at the site. A detailed list of other possible side effects or discomforts will be provided to those interested in knowing more about the study.
What is the pay?
Each participant will each receive $25.00 for their time.
