Type 1 Diabetes Study for Adolescents 9-11 Years Old

What is the purpose of this study?

Cincinnati Children's is conducting a research study to learn more about how children and families manage diabetes day-to-day. The study will focus on treatment adherence and blood glucose control, which often worsens during adolescence.

Who will be included in this study?

Families with a child 9 to 11 years old who has been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes for at least one year may be eligible to participate. (The family may include one parent, two parents or a caregiver.)

What is involved?

The study lasts for 3 years and includes 4 visits. The following is a list of procedures that will take place during the study:

  • You and your child will complete questionnaires and be interviewed
  • Your child will be observed with you in a problem-solving task pertaining to their diabetes (will be videotaped)
  • Blood draws will occur during research and clinic visits
  • Your child's physician will be asked to provide growth status from their initial and routine physical exams

What are the benefits?

You or your child may receive no direct benefit from participating in this study. However, the information gained from this research study may benefit other children with diabetes.  Research studies are essential in finding new and improved treatments and diagnostic tools.

Will I get all the facts about the study?

Parents interested in having their child participate will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study.  The form covers all of the procedures, the risks, the benefits, the pay, who to contact with questions or concerns and more.  A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that all of your questions are answered.  Study procedures will not begin until a parent or guardian has signed this form and, if of age, the child has given at minimum his/her verbal agreement.

What are the risks?

There are no physical risks associated with this study.  There is a possible risk of emotional discomfort associated with the family observation activity. A detailed list of possible emotional side effects will be provided to those parents or guardians interested in knowing more about this study.

What is the pay?

Parents will receive $20 and the child will be given a $35 gift card for time and travel at each visit. There is an option of an additional $5 per visit, if the family brings in the child's blood glucose meter.
