The goal of this study is to compare the use of bladder irrigations (using gentamicin) to an oral antibiotic in preventing urinary tract infections in children and young adults who require clean intermittent catheterization and have recurrent urinary tract infections.
Who will be included in this study?
Children and young adults 2 to 21 years old who have a history of urinary tract infections and are currently on clean intermittent catheterizations may be eligible to participate
What is involved?
The study lasts for 6 months and includes 2 physician visits. The following is a list of procedures that will take place during the study:
- Blood draws
- Renal ultrasounds
- Two Physician Visits
What are the benefits?
You or your child may receive no direct benefit from participating in this study. The biggest benefit is that you may be contributing to research that helps others. Clinical Studies are essential in finding new and improved treatments and diagnostic tools.
Will I get all the facts about the study?
As the participant or parent interested in having your child participate, you will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study. The form covers all of the procedures, the risks, the benefits, the pay, who to contact with questions or concerns and more. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that all of your questions are answered. Study procedures will not begin until you have signed this form.
What are the risks?
For study participants using the gentamicin bladder irrigation, the risks are very low if any. There is a low risk of adverse side effects (rash, stevens-johnson syndrome, neutropenia) with the oral antibiotic. Any questions regarding possible side effects can be answered by a member of the study staff.
What is the compensation?
Study participants will receive two gift cards.
