A Study of Autism and Loss of Skills
What is the purpose of this study?
Cincinnati Children’s is conducting a research study to help learn more about how genes might determine which children with autism lose their ability to use their words and gestures to communicate.
Who will be included in this study?
Children 3-18 years old who have been diagnosed with autism and regression (loss of language skills or other communication skills) may be eligible to participate.
What is involved?
The study includes 1 study visit that typically lasts 1 to 2 hours. The following is a list of procedures that will take place during the study:
An initial screening including questions about your child’s general health
A review of your child’s and family’s medical histories
A review of your child’s Cincinnati Children’s medical record
A request for your child’s immunization records from your pediatrician
Blood Sample OR Saliva Samples
What are the benefits?
Your child may receive no direct benefit from participating in this study. The greatest benefit is that your child may be contributing to research that helps other children with autism in the future.
Will I get all the facts about the study?
Parents interested in having their child participate will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study. The form covers all of the procedures, the risks, the benefits, the pay, who to contact with questions or concerns and more. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that all of your questions are answered. Study procedures will not begin until a parent or guardian has signed this form.
What are the risks and discomforts?
If a blood sample is taken, there is the possibility of a bruise and slight pain. There is a possibility that your child could have some discomfort from the sponges placed in his/her mouth to collect saliva samples. A detailed list of possible side effects will be provided to those parents or guardians interested in knowing more about this study.
What is the pay?
Families will be compensated for time and travel.
