What is the purpose of this study?

To determine differences in protein levels in milk from gestational diabetic and non-diabetic mothers.

Who will be included in this study?

Women who were diagnosed with gestational diabetes and who are planning to breastfeed or are breastfeeding may be able to participate. The study will take place one week after the mother has given birth.Mothers who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes may be eligible.

What is involved? 

This study includes 1 home visit that will last for about 1 hour.  The following is a list of procedures that will take place during the study:

  • Collection of breast milk
  • Collection of about 2 tablespoons of blood
  • Measurement of height and weight
  • A brief questionnaire will be completed

What are the benefits? 

You may receive no direct benefit from participating in this study. You will have access to a trained professional for breastfeeding counseling and support. The biggest benefit is that you may be contributing to research that helps others. Clinical studies are essential in finding new and improved treatments and diagnostic tools.

Will I get all the facts about the study?

You will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study. It goes over all of the procedures, the risks, the benefits, the compensation, who to contact with questions or concerns, and more. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that all of your questions are answered. Study procedures will not begin until you have signed this form.

What are the risks?

Giving a blood sample may cause minor stress, some pain and/or bruising at the site where blood is taken. You might experience some mild discomfort in the breast when providing a milk sample.

What is the compensation?

A Medela pump tubing kit; a $30 gift card to Kroger.
