Bone Density Research Study for Healthy Infants and Toddlers 6 to 36 Months Old

What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this study is to learn more about bone growth and strength in healthy infants and toddlers.  The information obtained will be used in the clinical evaluation of bone health in children with chronic diseases.

Who will be included in this study?

Healthy infants and toddlers between the ages of 6 and 36 months may qualify for this study.

What is involved?

This study consists of a 30 minute visit.  The following is a list of procedures that will take place during the visit.

  • Motor skill assessment (How a child moves his/her body)
  • Height and weight measurements
  • Spine scan (DXA scan)

What are the benefits?

Your child may receive no direct benefit from participating in this study.  The greatest benefit is that your child may be helping other children.  Clinical studies are essential in finding new and improved treatments and diagnostic tools.

Will I get all the facts about the study?

Parents interested in having their child participate will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study.  It includes all of the procedures, the risks, the benefits, the compensation, who to contact with questions or concerns, and more.  A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that all of your questions are answered.  Study procedures will not begin until a parent/guardian has signed this form.

What are the risks?

There is a minimal risk associated with radiation exposure from the DXA scan.

What is the pay?

Parents will receive a $25 Target gift card for the 30 minute visit.
